Premium cables: ripoff or required?

"Here's my take: For digital signals like an optical or coax audio, or DVI video, you don't need anything special. Why? because the signal quality is built into the digital signal. Things like error correction are handled on either end of the digital cables. Either you have a connection or you don't. And if you have it, then its a guaranteed connection at the quality of the digital signal. The exact same pulses of lights are going through a $3 optical cable as are going through a $100 optical cable.
For analog, such as speaker wire or RCA cable, you have the complete opposite - no "smarts" on one end or the other to guarantee that the signal that left your reciever is the same signal that arrives at the speaker. Here it pays for the quality cables with the least interferance."
